Summer Holidays: 10 days in Latvia

Riga: History, Culture, and Elegance

We began in Riga, a city with a history stretching back to the 13th century, shaped by the Hanseatic League, German merchants, and later Soviet occupation. Today, it feels both historic and modern.

We explored the city mostly on foot, strolling through its green parks, admiring the Art Nouveau district—one of the largest collections of this architecture style in the world—and wandering the narrow streets of the Old Town. The highlights included the majestic House of the Blackheads, the bustling Central Market housed in old Zeppelin hangars, the chilling KGB Building, and the deeply moving Museum of the Occupation of Latvia.

Our hotel was extremely comfortable, setting the tone for a pleasant stay. Evenings were spent enjoying great meals in restaurants tucked away in the Art Nouveau district, where history and elegance blend beautifully.

Jūrmala: Seaside Charm

After a few days in the capital, we hopped on a train to Jūrmala. The trip from Riga Central Station to Majori takes only about 30 minutes, making it a perfect escape from the city.

In Jūrmala, we settled into a welcoming aparthotel for six days of rest. The town, famous since the 19th century as a Baltic resort, charmed us with its long, sandy beach stretching for miles, ideal for peaceful walks. We loved wandering the quiet streets lined with wooden villas, many painted in soft pastel colors, and spending time along the lively pedestrian promenade, dotted with restaurants, cafés, and terraces. It was the perfect mix of relaxation and discovery.

Practical Tips for Travelers

  • Transport: Riga is very walkable, and public transport is easy to use. The train ride to Jūrmala takes only about half an hour, with frequent departures.

  • Accommodation: Both Riga and Jūrmala offer a wide range of comfortable hotels, aparthotels or apartments many with excellent amenities. Booking ahead in summer is recommended.

  • Food: The Art Nouveau district in Riga has plenty of quality restaurants, while Jūrmala’s promenade offers a casual, seaside dining atmosphere.

  • Season: Summer is ideal for combining city sightseeing with time at the beach. The weather is mild compared to southern Europe, perfect for walking and outdoor activities.

  • Culture & History: Don’t miss Riga’s museums for a deeper understanding of Latvia’s past, and take time in Jūrmala to admire the charming wooden architecture.

Our summer holidays in Latvia gave us a rich taste of both the country’s cultural depth and its natural beauty. Riga impressed us with its architectural grandeur and complex history, while Jūrmala offered serenity by the sea. Together, they made for a journey that was both enlightening and deeply refreshing.
