We spent a wonderful summer holiday in Porto, Portugal, a city that blends old-world charm with vibrant modern life. Our home base was a cozy Vrbo apartment in the city center, perfectly located with a breathtaking view of Porto’s Cathedral (Sé do Porto)—an ideal spot to soak in the atmosphere before setting out to explore.

Exploring Porto’s Treasures
Porto’s historic old town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, felt like stepping back in time with its narrow cobblestone streets, colorful tiled façades, and bustling cafés. We crossed the iconic Ponte Dom Luís I Bridge, where the sweeping views over the Douro River left us speechless.
The city’s cultural highlights didn’t disappoint. We visited the famous Livraria Lello, often called one of the most beautiful bookshops in the world, and enjoyed coffee and tea at the opulent Majestic Cafe, a Belle Époque gem. The Crystal Palace Garden offered a peaceful green retreat with panoramic views of the river, while the Serralves Foundation Park showcased contemporary art in a stunning landscaped setting.
A highlight was our walk along the Atlantic coast to the Chapel of the Lord of the Stone (Capela do Senhor da Pedra) in Vila Nova de Gaia, a chapel dramatically perched on the sand where the waves meet the shore.
For a change of pace, we boarded a train at the remarkable São Bento Station, famous for its blue azulejo tiles, and headed to the Douro Valley for a day trip through terraced vineyards.

Food was a big part of our trip. We had lunch at Flow, where creative modern cuisine meets Portuguese tradition, and at Tapabento, a hidden gem offering warm hospitality and delicious dishes.

Bring good shoes: Porto’s hilly streets and cobblestones require comfortable walking shoes.
